As we head to 2027 general election, political temperature has begin to rise and Raila Odinga appears to be playing a long game this becoming a man to watch.
He seems to concentrating on his strategy, raising the stakes for any possible alliance with President William Ruto.
According to political commentator Onyango Okello, Raila Odinga leader of opposition recent silence over the actions of key leaders in ODM like Governors Anyang’ Nyong’o, James Orengo, and Senator Edwin Sifuna who is the general secretary for ODM is not by accident.
Instead of tightening the reins, Raila is reportedly allowing his lieutenants operate freely as part of a broader strategy to increase his bargaining power.
Okello agues that, Raila knows how to frustrate his opponents for leverage. “He’s done it before, and he plans to do it again. In every pact he’s joined, he has positioned himself as the dominant player. 2027 will be no different.” he emphasized.

Okello compares Raila’s deliberate approach with that of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who was impeached, who he describes as having prematurely rushed into a political pact with Ruto without securing strong ground. “It was like a teenager running into a toxic marriage,” he notes clearly.
Okello goes on to caution that Raila is fully aware of the risks of aligning his party too quickly or naively with Ruto’s UDA party. “Ruto has proven to be treacherous, just ask Gachagua. Only a fool would step into a deal with him unprepared, and Raila Odinga is certainly no fool.”
As speculation grows about a possible ODM-UDA power-sharing agreement in preparation for 2027 general elections, Okello believes Raila will insist on a firm constitutional stake most properly the deputy presidency. Where the position will be protected by law, minimizing the chance of betrayal post-election.
Okello concluded by pointing out that, in Raila’s world, if you’re going to eat with the devil, you better bring a very long spoon.
This strategic patience, combined with a sharp political instinct and experience with previous governments, paints a picture of a seasoned politician preparing for one final act on Kenya’s national political stage on his own terms.
